The Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has research assistantships available for M.S. or Ph.D. students interested in pursuing research in watershed management, water quality, and hydrology. The student will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers and students investigating water quality and community capacity for planning and conservation in eight urbanizing agricultural subwatersheds of the Lower Kaskaskia River Watershed in southern Illinois. Key research questions include: 1.) How do land use and conservation practices affect water quality? 2.) What is the capacity of urban and rural communities in the subwatersheds to engage in watershed planning and adopt comprehensive conservation strategies? The project is funded by the USDA CSREES Water Quality program. Anticipated start date for assistantships is January 2008.
