The latest issue of Time magazine (at least the European edition) has a relevant article on environmental programs in American schools which appear to be very successful. Of course a news story is not the same as a research summary, but at least some of the programs seem to have been very effective at making young students aware of environmental issues, including ecological aspects (such as constructing an artificial wetland to filter waste water).
