POSITION AVAILABLE:

Jr. Specialist position, full time, located at the Bodega Marine Lab
(BML), Bodega Bay, CA (2 hours west of the UC Davis campus). Step 1
salary $2,639.00 per month, dependent on qualifications &
experience. A Bachelor’s degree is required.

NATURE AND PURPOSE:

The successful candidate will conduct research in marine intertidal
ecology. Specifically, research will focus on factors (biotic and
abiotic) driving algal assemblages and how these assemblages, in
turn, affect ecosystem function. The candidate will maintain updated
literature libraries and knowledge of current work and methodologies
relevant to this research.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

I) Field and Lab Experiment Support (70%)

A) Set up short-term experiments to quantify the effects of
changes in seaweed diversity on nitrogen uptake and photosynthesis
rates of seaweed assemblages. Assist Principal Investigator and other
lab personnel with collection of seaweeds for experimental trials,
preparation of experimental apparatus, and measurement of nutrient
uptake and oxygen production rates.

B) Maintain experiments in the Bodega Marine Reserve that evaluate
the effects of various factors (herbivory, nutrients, physical
stress, tidal height, wave exposure) on seaweed diversity. Add
nutrients on a regular schedule, check the experimental apparatus for
wear and tear, conduct repairs when needed, and census the plots
periodically.

C) Wash and prepare (acid rinse) glassware and equipment for lab
experiments and field collections

II) Data Maintenance and Analysis (30%)

A) Maintain records of all results of laboratory and field
experiments, enter them into computer spreadsheets and databases, and
conduct simple analyses to illustrate results.

B) Maintain regular communication with other laboratory personnel,
students, trainees, visitors, and the Principal Investigator.

C) Keep detailed records of field and laboratory techniques.

D) Follow written protocols for methods developed during the
course of this project.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Interested applicants should submit: 1) a brief letter of intent
