Position Description: Watershed Scientist/Water Resource Engineer
Advertised June 25, 2008 – Open until filled
Overview
Sustainable Resources Group Intn’l, Inc. (SRGII), a small Hawaii-based
environmental consulting firm, seeks an enthusiastic individual to
serve as a watershed scientist/water resource engineer. Successful
candidate will participate in a variety of interdisciplinary projects
ranging from wetland design and watershed analysis, to sustainable
design and development.
SRGII’s approach to problem-solving utilizes the best available
science integrated with the principles of engineering analysis, as
well as our extensive scientific and management planning experience.
Working closely with clients, we adapt solutions to their unique needs
and constraints. Project work employs a natural systems engineering
approach, which utilizes engineering principles and the scientific
process to develop innovative cost effective solutions.
Position Summary
The watershed scientist/water resource engineer will utilize their
technical expertise to efficiently conduct background assessments and
quantitative analysis, develop natural system technical designs, and
prepare supporting reports. Projects focus on hydrological,
watershed, and natural resource management and will include additional
work to support the growing market of sustainable design.
Responsibilities
- Assist principals and co-employees in all aspects of project
development;
- Assist in the design and conduct of water resources analysis;
- Collect and analyze field data to support land use and
permitting projects, ESA, CWA and NEPA documentation;
- Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and
other maps and tools to assist with conduct and interpretation of
fieldwork;
- Conduct thorough scientific literature reviews;
- Apply statistical methods and utilize statistical software as
appropriate;
- Draft reports of findings for clients;
- Assist principals at meetings with clients, agencies and
stakeholders;
- Design and conduct environmental monitoring studies;
- Work cooperatively as a team member with other contractors;
federal, state, and local agency personnel; and clients;
- Work closely with principals and co-employees to promote
SRGII’s business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and
values.
Qualifications
Skills and Knowledge
- Technical experience in watershed and hydrologic studies;
engineering methods to quantify surface and groundwater; knowledge of
the principles of geomorphology; an understanding of erosion processes
and methods to reduce erosion rates; and an understanding of Hawaii's
climatic regime.
- Strong quantitative skills; ability to collect, process and
analyze data, preferably gained through a combination of academic
training and on-the-job experience.
- Experience in field measurements of natural resources,
including field use of GPS and GIS. Willing to work out-of-doors in
occasionally strenuous conditions.
- Ability to work utilizing an interdisciplinary approach.
- Familiarity with federal, state and local regulatory and
permitting requirements for land use and natural resources.
- Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to draft
clear, concise and effective project reports, papers, presentations
and proposals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including professional
communication style; ability to interact effectively with coworkers,
public and private clients; diplomacy and tact in politically
sensitive situations; and ability to maintain strict client
confidentiality.
- Self-motivated and ability to work independently. Excellent
organization and planning skills, including ability to coordinate a
variety of tasks, set and keep deadlines, and work effectively under
pressure.
- Open-minded to suggestions and new approaches to problem-
solving.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets,
email, presentation and database software; knowledge of or the ability
to learn use of ArcGIS and AutoCAD.
Education
- Bachelors degree required, Masters or Doctoral degree
preferred in physical or natural science (e.g. hydrology, geology), or
engineering.
- Coursework: at least 30 semester hours in any combination of
courses in hydrology, physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry,
engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric
science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management of
conservation of water resources; at least 6 semester hours in calculus
(including both differential and integral calculus); and at least 6
semester hours in physics.
Experience
- Minimum: 1-2 years technical work experience in a related
field, with demonstrated successful performance and increasing level
of responsibility.
- Preferred: 2-4 years of applicable professional experience
(watershed science/engineering).
Other
Position may be part- to full-time; to be determined. Position
located on the Island of O‘ahu. Applicants will work within the
Hawaiian Islands. No relocation costs are available. Persons who
have lived and worked in the Hawaiian Islands are encouraged to
apply. Possession of (or ability to obtain) a valid Hawaii State
driver’s license is a requirement upon acceptance of position.
