M.S. Opportunity in Aquatic Ecology Funding is available at Georgia Southern University (GSU) starting fall 2009 to support a Master's student to participate in a study of phytoplankton community response to nutrient changes in the Altamaha River. The Altamaha is the largest river system east of the Mississippi, with a ~37,000 km2 watershed draining nearly one quarter of the area of Georgia. This watershed is home to more than 50 threatened and endangered species and was designated a Bioreserve in 1991 by the Nature Conservancy. The successful applicant will be expected to assist in both field and laboratory studies investigating phytoplankton community dynamics using both traditional and DNA barcoding techniques.
The successful applicant will be expected to enter the M.S. program in Biology at GSU in fall 2009. Support in the form of a teaching assistantship is available during the fall and spring semesters. Support in the form of a research assistantship is available for two summer terms. Tuition and basic major medical insurance will also be provided. Interested students should submit a resume, undergraduate transcripts, GRE scores, a statement of interest and career goals, and two letters of reference to Dr. Risa Cohen or Dr. Scott Harrison, Department of Biology, Georgia Southern University, P.O. Box 8042, Statesboro, GA 30460-8042.
