Mark (and list),
Paul Geissler from the USGS and Tom Philippi from NPS have just
recently hosted an online, interactive introductory course on R. I
believe they intend to offer it again next fall. In any case, all
classes from the previous installment were recorded and are available
at:
http://www.fort.usgs.gov/brdscience/LearnR.htm
They are also having contributors host special sessions on different
topics, so keep checking their website for updates.
Regarding books, I would also recommend "Ecological models and Data in
R" by Benjamin Bolker, which is also a great introduction to
ecological modeling, which was the focus of recent topics in the list.

Thank you for the review of R manuals - it's useful information for
me.
I tried to join the R*evolution several years ago, but the slope was a
little steep for me. I'm academically isolated, and statistical
analysis is
no longer a necessity for my applied tasks. More like a service I can
perform for the work group when time permits.
Can you recommend any distance learning or intensive (2 - 10 day)
courses
designed to bring newbies into the R fold? I'm looking for
something that
is not rock bottom introductory, but more like an agressive review.
