Academic Staff Lab Instructor Position

POSITION: The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Geography Program
invites applications for Two Physical Geography Lab Lecturers as
Academic Staff for the 2009 fall and 2010 spring semesters (August-May).
This is a 93% position (contingent on enrollment), and the salary will
be in the range of $30-32,000.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the guidance of the Geography Faculty, the lab
instructor will teach seven two-hour Introductory Physical Geography
labs a week, assist in lab curriculum design and assessment, and be
available for office hours. Labs sections have 24 students and are
scheduled Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday for the fall semester.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1) MA or MS in Geography, Geology or Ecology, 2)
specialization in Physical Geography, Quaternary Geology, or Ecology
with a Earth Systems Emphasis, 3) teaching experience, 4) prior
knowledge and experience in curriculum development and assessment, and
classroom computer technology, 5) experience with basic Geographic
Information Systems, 6) enthusiasm for teaching in laboratory and
outdoor settings and 7) a demonstrated commitment to or experience with
racially diverse populations. Employment will require a criminal
background check pursuant to UW-System policy.
GEOGRAPHY AT UW-PLATTEVILLE: The Geography/Geology Program is part of
the Department of Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and
Education. Currently we have five full time faculty and three academic
staff instructors. Our primary responsibility is as a service department
to support the University’s general education requirements and its
programs in education, reclamation, engineering, science, and the
liberal arts. We also offer major and minor programs in Geography, and a
minor program in Environmental Science.
LOCATION AND CHARACTER OF THE UNIVERSITY: The University of
Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, enrolls approximately 6,000
students in primarily undergraduate programs leading to degrees in
agriculture, the arts, business, communication, education, engineering,
the humanities, industry, mathematics, and the physical and social
sciences. Campus is located 70 miles southwest of Madison in the heart
of the Driftless Area in the largest community in southwestern
Wisconsin. The diverse physical and biological landscapes of the
Driftless Area offer abundant opportunities for field-based laboratory
exercises and field trips.
