The Great Turtle Race starts April 16!
The Great Turtle Race is about to hit the open ocean! The event is being
co-organized by Conservation International and National Geographic with
field partner, The Canadian Sea Turtle Network. This year, eleven
leatherback sea turtles (adult males and females) will be racing from
Canada’s Atlantic coast to the beaches of the Wider Caribbean.
Don’t miss out on the action! The Race officially launches Thursday, April
16th, at 11am EST on www.GreatTurtleRace.org (hosted by National
Geographic), but you can sign up RIGHT NOW for daily race updates – full of
fun turtle facts and play-by-play race highlights straight from the ocean:
http://www.conservation.org/turtlerace.

Also, check out the May issue of National Geographic magazine, which
includes a feature story on leatherback turtles highlighting several sea
turtle experts, and promotes the Race.

A few exciting details about the Great Turtle Race:

   - All eleven turtles were tagged with a satellite-tracking device while
in feeding areas off Nova Scotia, Canada, by the Canadian Sea Turtle
Network, and the GTR website will allow you to follow them from Canada to
   the Caribbean.

   - U.S. Olympic swimmers Amanda Beard, Janet Evans, Jason Lezak, Aaron
Peirsol and Eric Shanteau will “coach” our turtle competitors and post notes
of encouragement to the turtles throughout the race. The 'Voice of
Swimming,' former Olympian and current NBC commentator Rowdy Gaines will be
the official race announcer, along with the globetrotting turtle superstar,
   Mr Leatherback.

   - Rock bands R.E.M. and Pearl Jam have jumped on the turtle bandwagon.
Both bands have picked their early favorites. Find out which ones by signing
   up for our daily
updates:http://www.conservation.or<http://www.conservation.org/turtlerace>
   g/turtlerace <http://www.conservation.org/turtlerace>

   - guest bloggers include all of the Olympic swimmers/'turtle coaches,'
Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, Mike Mills of R.E.M., Dr Carl Safina of the Blue
Ocean Institute, Dr Sylvia Earle of the Deep Search Foundation, Dr Wallace
'J' Nichols of Ocean Revolution, and Josh Berry of Save the Waves Coalition

Sign up to receive up-to-the-minute race updates and hear more about how you
can help protect our turtle racers – as well as their relatives:
http://www.conservation.org/turtlerace

And after you sign-up for updates, spread the word about the “Great Turtle
Race” to your network of friends and family. Share it with your co-workers,
your classmates, and your relatives.

See you at the race!
