Not to put too fine a point on it, but human procreation seems to be the
problem moreso than individual carbon footprint.

I think the one ecological concept often overlooked is the idea that
there really aren't any wasted resources; everything is being used by
something.  Each additional human usurps resources that could be growing
more butterflies or elephants.

The trick of course, is figuring out some kind of balance that makes
sense to each of us on a personal level. The desire to minimize our own
impacts is often over-ridden by the biological desire to pass on genetic
information even though we all know how un-important our own genes are
in a population sense.

But sustainability will simply never occur on a finite planet with an
ever increasing human population no matter how much some of us attempt
to reduce our individual footprints.
