Research Fellowships in Coral Reef Studies

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies is an internationally 
renowned research centre encompassing >200 researchers and graduate 
students, administered by James Cook University (see 
http://www.coralcoe.org.au) in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.  The 
Centre undertakes research in >40 countries, and will host the 
International Coral Reef Symposium in Australia in 2012. Fellowship 
positions are open to ALL career stages (from outstanding new PhD 
graduates to Professorial level Fellows), in four of the Centre’s 
Programs: 

Conservation Planning for a Sustainable Future – explores practical 
approaches to cost-effective conservation planning, to promote the 
persistence of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the context of 
extractive and non-extractive human uses. 

Understanding and Managing Coral Reef Biodiversity –  focuses on 
mechanisms and processes that maintain coral reef biodiversity.

Resilience of Linked Social-Ecological Systems –  promotes multi-
disciplinary research that combines expertise on coral reef biology, 
management, governance, economics and social sciences.

Policy Development, Institutions and Governance of Coral Reefs –   
addresses the multi-faceted challenges of improving coral reef governance 
locally and across multinational boundaries.


Employment Type: Appointments will be full-time for a fixed-term of 3 
years subject to a probationary period. Suitable candidates may be 
considered for extension beyond 3 years or for permanent positions.  These 
are full time research-only positions, and successful applicants must have 
exceptional track records. 


Selection criteria: Applicants must have:


a PhD in related discipline 
Exceptional publication record for stage of career 
Evidence of research ability in one or more discipline(s) relevant to the 
research area 
Established links (national and international) with appropriate research 
organisations and personnel 
Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills 

Salary: Academic Level A - $A61,856 - $A66,282, B - $A69,689 - $A82,461, 
C - $A85,013 - $A97,784, D - $A102,041 - $A112,254, or E - $130,987 per 
annum. Level of appointment and commencing salary will be in accordance 
with qualifications and experience. Benefits include generous employer
