investing in and developing sustainability as a campuswide initiative,
which provides great opportunity to any incoming Dean. The College of
Social Sciences houses the great majority of existing sustainability
curriculum at SJSU.

*About the Position*
The Dean serves as the senior administrator and is the principal
champion for innovative vision, leadership and strategic direction for
the College's academic departments and programs. The Dean must work
effectively with faculty, staff and other administrators to articulate
the College and University mission, vision and education philosophy.
The Dean is responsible for coordination of the College's academic
planning, assessment of curriculum and instruction, recruitment and
evaluation of faculty and staff, professional development, budgeting and
management of funds, and the allocation and use of facilities. The Dean
represents the College and University in community, corporate, and
professional organizations, and works to develop resources from internal
and external sources to further the goals of the College and University.
The Dean of the College of Social Sciences is the chief executive and
intellectual leader of the College, shaping its vision, generating
resources in support of its mission, developing innovative programs that
will distinguish the College of Social Sciences among the nation's
foremost undergraduate and graduate schools of social sciences, leading
significant and productive growth of the faculty, maintaining vital ties
to the local community, and overseeing operations.
The Dean must exhibit superior management skills, effectiveness in
resource acquisition and allocation, ability to build partnerships
within the University and throughout the community, and a clear
understanding of California and national trends in education. As a
member of the Provost's management team, the Dean works with the
President, Provost, and other Deans, and other senior administrators to
manage the University's resources to enhance the accomplishment of
College and University goals. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs of SJSU, and through him to the President.
The Dean is responsible for setting the direction for and providing
leadership to the College of Social Sciences and its faculty, staff and
students. The Dean, through the College's faculty and staff, is
responsible for faculty recruitment and appointments, curriculum and
program development, student recruitment and retention, and the
College's budget and finances.
*Responsibilities include:
*- Provide leadership to faculty and staff, encouraging a sense of
academic community and the vision, commitment, and integrity necessary
to define and accomplish College and University goals.
- Develop relationships with various stakeholders across the College,
University, and broader community to achieve excellence in the College
and University's teaching, research, and service.
- Manage state-provided resources fairly and effectively and takes
initiative to seek out and generate external resources.
- Provide direction and support to departments to assure goals,
programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and
contribute to College and University goals and strategies.
- Cooperate with departments in faculty recruitment, retention,
promotion, and tenure procedures, and interviews job candidates.
- Articulate and advocate the role of social sciences on campus and in
the Silicon Valley community.

*The mission of the College of Social Sciences is to educate students in
human behavior, in its many past and present cultural forms, in
individual, group, national and international contexts, and to empower
students as democratic participants in a rapidly changing world.
The College of Social Sciences consists of the Departments of
African-American Studies, Anthropology, Communication Studies,
Economics, Environmental Studies, History, Geography, Mexican-American
Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Social Science (Asian American
Studies, Social Science, & Women's Studies), Sociology, and Urban and
Regional Planning. A Global Studies program, involving faculty from
throughout the university, is also included. The College has 136
full-time equivalent faculty and more than 4000 full-time equivalent
students.
*Academic Administration
*The Dean reports directly to the Provost. The Provost is the chief
academic officer of the University. Academic programs are delivered by
the faculty of various departments and schools, which are organized into
seven colleges. One of these is the College of Social Sciences.
Additionally, there are associate vice presidents in the Academic
Affairs Division: Faculty Affairs, Institutional Research, International
and Extended Studies, Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies and
Research, and Dean of the University Library.
*Education and Experience
*The successful candidate for the position will have:
- An earned doctorate from an accredited institution as well as
expertise in one or more of the disciplines represented within the College;
- A record of scholarly work and quality teaching sufficient to have
earned tenure and the rank of Full Professor;
- Minimum 5 yrs. of administrative experience as a Dean, Associate Dean,
department Chair or other relevant leadership experience.

- The proven experience in promoting academic excellence, student
success, preparation and innovation
- Demonstrated excellence in effective academic planning,
administration, personnel, and fiscal management
- Demonstrated potential for productive community fundraising and
involvement

- An earned doctorate in one or more of the disciplines represented
within the College, and an outstanding teaching and scholarly
achievement record (commensurate with the rank of full professor) with
evidence of significant and ongoing professional activity
- Awareness of, and sensitivity to the educational goals of a
multicultural population and active participation in enhancing the
educational and professional opportunities of underserved or
