Dear All - I would like to thank all those who sent in suggestions for basic and introductory texts (plus software, papers and websites also) on the subject of multivariate statistics. Here is a compilation of those replies:

*The most frequently recommended text (and software) was this one:*
McCune, B. and J. B. Grace. 2002. /Analysis of ecological communities/. MjM Software Designs, Gleneden Beach, OR. McCune, B. and M. J. Mefford. 2006. /PC-ORD. Multivariate analysis of ecological data. Ver. 5/. MjM Software Designs, Gleneden Beach, OR.

*This one ranked high also:*
McGarigal, K., S. Cushman and S. Stafford. 2000. /Multivariate Statistics for Wildlife and Ecology Research/ (paperback, $41). Springer.

*This one was mentioned several times for the clarity of the writing:*
Gotelli, N. and A. Ellison. 2004. /A Primer of Ecological Statistics/. Sinauer & Associates.
(paperback, $37).

Tabachnic, B. and L. Fidell. 2006. /Using Multivariate Statistics, 5th Ed/. Allyn & Bacon.
Note: this one comes in at a whopping 1008 pages and costs $112!

*Others receiving at least one mention were:*
Shaw, Peter. 2009. /Multivariate Statistics for Environmental Sciences/. Wiley. (paperback, $61).

Kent, M. and P. Coker. 1995. /Vegetation Description & Analysis: A Practical Approach/. John Wiley & Sons (out of print).

Legendre P, Legendre L. 1998. /Numerical ecology, Vol. 20, 2nd ed/. Elsevier Science. (paperback, $99). This one is 870 pgs.

/Permanova+ for Primer /by Marti Anderson, Ray Gorley, and Robert Clarke. You might not be able to get this one without also purchasing the software, Primer.

Bolker, B. /Ecological Models in R/. (couldn’t find this one in Amazon)

Crawley, M. 2007. /The R Book/. Wiley. (950 pgs, $77). Crawley also has other R books.

Manly, B.F.J. 2004. /Multivariate statistical methods: a primer, 3rd ed/. Chapman & Hall. (paperback, $52).

*Two papers were also suggested:*
Anderson MJ (2001) A new method for non-parametric multivariate analysis of variance. Austral Ecology 26:32-46 Anderson MJ, Willis TJ (2003) Canonical analysis of principal coordinates: a useful method of constrained ordination for ecology. Ecology 84:511-525. The website for her software is: http://www.stat.auckland.ac.nz/~mja/Programs.htm The person recommending these papers also wrote “/One useful thing about Marti's work is that she often puts in an ANOVA context, which ecologists tend to be more comfortable with/.”

*Several websites were also recommended:*
