I run a research program on shellfish population assessment and estuarine
habitats in Oregon estuaries for the Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife. The attached announcement is for 4 seasonal sampler positions to
help with detailed bay clam populations (cockles, littlenecks, butters,
gapers) in Tillamook Bay, Oregon. This positions last from 6-12 months and

Classification: Experimental Biology Aide - 4 Positions
Salary Range: $1,979 – $2,052 per month (Commensurate with experience)
Location: Newport and Tillamook, Oregon
Duration: One position – 12 months (starting April 1, 2010), Newport
One position – 6 months (starting May 1, 2010), Newport
One position – 6 months (starting June 1, 2010), Newport
One position – 6 months (starting April 1, 2010), Tillamook
Job Description: These positions combine to form a 6 person team of
samplers that support a field based project to assess estuarine shellfish
populations and habitats primarily in Tillamook Bay, with additional
travel to other estuaries. Work includes:
�h Intertidal surveys of estuarine shellfish populations
�h Field sampling to characterize estuarine habitats
�h Collecting biological data on samples (e.g. species composition,
length, age, etc.)
�h Data recording and management, including data entry
�h Equipment maintenance (e.g. boats, field sampling equipment, etc.)
�h Participation in literature review, data analysis, report writing,
Requirements:
�h Must be willing to work long hours in the field in estuarine habitats;
this position requires a flexible work schedule that will vary in the
number of hours worked each day (but not necessarily every day), and a
work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary each day
(but not necessarily every day)
�h Must have valid driver license and an acceptable driving record
�h Must have or obtain an Oregon Boater Education card (For more
information about mandatory boater education in Oregon, please see the
Oregon State Marine Board website at www.boatoregon.com)
�h Minimum qualifications are not established for this position, however,
priority may be given to applicants with one or more of the following
skills:
o Degree in biological or marine sciences
o Field experience in aquatic environments, especially remote
locations
o Small boat handling/maintenance/operation
o Familiarity or experience with GIS mapping
o Experimental design and gear preparation
o Data management and statistical analysis
o CPR and First Aid training
