In preparation for the ESA annual meeting in Pittsburgh, PA (Sunday Aug 1st
- Friday Aug 6th), the ESA-StudentSection (ESA-SS) has put together a
fantastic series of events that we would like to bring up to your attention.

Saturday, July 31, 2010:
   - 8.30-5pm: Fiedltrip "Brownfield blitzers: a dialog with inner city
Pittsburgh neighborhoods using visual approaches for conserving
biodiversity, engaging communities, sharing knowledge and addressing
environmental justice"

Monday, August 2, 2010:
   - 11.30-1.15pm: ESA Undergraduate Orientation, room 323   ...    your
first time at the conference and want tips on how to "survive" this sea of
ecology? want to hear suggestions from academic and non-academic employers
on how to get NSF funds, plan successful grad school applications or find a
job? Then this event is for you! Free appetizers and refreshments!

   - 6.30-8pm: ESA-SS Mixer, Lawrence Hall Lobbies, Point Park University
... if you want to establish more connections among young ecologists, come
out and socialize with us! This is a ticketed event and it always gets sold
out, so rush and get your ticket now! (

   - 8pm-...: ESA-SS night out ... following the ESA-SS mixer, our student
local hosts will take us around Pittsburgh for some fun. Come join us! We
will be leaving from the ESA-SS Mixer location at 8.30pm.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010:
   - 11.30-1.15pm: ESA-SS Choice Award Ceremony, room 323  ...   come enjoy
ecofilms and ecophotos, and join us in the celebration of the achievements
by young ecologists. This event is open to all ESA members

Wednesday, August 4, 2010:
   - 11.30-1.15pm: ESA-SS Business Meeting, room 323   ...   do you have
thoughts about future directions for the ESA-SS or simply would like to know
how we've planned our activities and what we plan on doing for next year
(Austin, TX)? Then come and join us at this event. There'll be free pizza
and refreshments!

   - 8-10pm: Workshop "Show me the money: how to write successful student
grant proposals", room 319    ...    learn first hand from the granting
agency boards what makes a strong proposal and get specific tips from NSF
DIGG awardees on how to get your NSF!

   - 8-10pm: Workshop "Drought, water-ecosystem services, and environmental
justice: case studies and research needs in a changing world", room 315-316

Thursday, August 5, 2010:
   - 11.30-1.15pm: Workshop "Fight for what's right: become a student leader
in planetary stewardship", room 309     ...   have you ever been asked by a
non-science citizen what good your research is for? ... please join us an a
vivid discussion by the hand of Terry Chapin and Mary Power on how to become
active planetary stewards and how to engage your local community in your
research. There'll be free appetizers and refreshments

Friday, August 6, 2010:
   - 8-11.30am: Symposium "Revolutionary Ecology: multidisciplinary and
multimedia approaches to cooling the planet"

the exhibitors area for specific information about both sections and local
info about Pittsburgh!
