The Union of Concerned Scientists invites you to participate in the latest
webinar in a series on tropical deforestation and land use: Report Back on
REDD+ in Cancun: new joint research with NASA, a new UCS report and an
update on the negotiations. This webinar will be held on Wednesday, December
15, 2010 from 12:30 - 2 p.m. EST. RSVP here:

Deforestation and forest degradation in tropical countries account for about
15 percent of heat-trapping emissions each year. To help mitigate the worst
effects of climate change, developing nations need to reduce net emissions
from tropical forests by 50 percent by 2020, and bring them to zero by 2030.
However, a rapid reduction in deforestation and forest degradation will not
be enough to achieve those goals. These nations must also scale up
activities that increase carbon sequestration in tropical forests, such as
encouraging secondary forest growth.

The webinar will feature Pipa Elias of the Union of Concerned Scientists and
Dr. Doug Morton of NASA to discuss joint research on secondary forest growth
in the Amazon over the past decade. The webinar will also cover a new UCS
report, The Plus Side: Promoting Sustainable Carbon Sequestration in
Tropical Forests (www.ucsusa.org/plus-side), detailing the necessary
policies to encourage carbon sequestration in forests and how to implement
these policies successfully. The research and report are being released
during the United Nations climate change meeting in Cancun, Mexico, which is
underway right now.

The webinar will include a report back from Cancun on the progress in the
negotiations to create a global agreement for REDD+ (reducing emissions from
deforestation and degradation, plus related pro-forest activities). Right
now, the REDD+ negotiations are at a critical point and a real agreement
could be made in the next couple of days. Join us next week to learn more
about the negotiations and what was agreed upon.
