Yale University Professor Nancy Ann Moran was awarded the International Prize in Biology on December 6 for her work in the Biology of Symbiosis at a ceremony at the Japan Academy of Science in the presence of the Emperor and Empress and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The photo just became available today, having now been cleared for release by the Imperial Household Agency.

The prize was established in 1985 to commemorate the 60+ year reign of the Emperor Showa and his longtime devotion to biological research. The prize is awarded annually to a leading researcher in the designated field of biology, without regard to nationality. The prize is accompanied by an honorarium of 10 million yen, roughly $118,000 at current exchange rates.

In her acceptance remarks, Moran thanked NSF for its generous support over the years and made special mention of female scientific mentors who over the years have shown her not only how to be a good researcher but how to have a rich life outside of the lab.
