Freshwater Conservation Practitioner
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources or a science-related field
and 2 years of experience in freshwater conservation or ecology, natural
resource management, or wetland restoration or ecology.
• Knowledge of natural freshwater systems.
• Experience using Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and the
Internet.
The Freshwater Conservation Practitioner will support The Nature
Conservancy’s on-the-ground efforts to conserve and restore freshwater
biodiversity in Central and Western New York and statewide. S/he will
help implement a range of projects to achieve short-and long-range
conservation objectives, including: wetland hydrology and plant
restoration and monitoring, invasive species prevention and control,
floodplain protection and restoration, flow restoration, policy analysis,
and native fish habitat restoration and monitoring. S/he will work
closely with colleagues in the Chapter and other Conservancy offices and
with partners to implement on-going and new conservation projects; help
establish specific project and Chapter goals related to freshwater
biodiversity conservation; and help identify appropriate strategies and
tactics for implementation. The Freshwater Conservation Practitioner will
work with a range of state, federal, and other nonprofit partners to
achieve conservation success, will participate on the New York State
Freshwater Conservation Priority Team, and will support the Chapter’s
participation in multi-site and multi-scale strategies spanning state and
international boundaries. The Freshwater Conservation Practitioner will
be supervised by the Senior Conservation Scientist. This position can be
based in either our Rochester, New York office or Pulaski, New York office.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Freshwater Conservation Practitioner implements freshwater
conservation and restoration throughout the Chapter, with some emphasis on
Eastern Lake Ontario. This may include one or more of the following
functions:
• Provides leadership/technical support for project management,
monitoring and evaluation, environmental policy, and stakeholder
engagement for the Chapter’s freshwater conservation efforts.
• Assists in successfully completing large, coastal wetland
restoration and monitoring projects.
• Implements stream and lake habitat restoration projects.
• Assists with early detection of and rapid response to aquatic
invasive species.
• Ensures consistent and quality ecological data collection and
management.
• Leads development of practical applications of scientific concepts
and technical innovations to achieve meaningful conservation outcomes.
• Establishes and maintains partnerships with key public and private
organizations and local communities to support the Chapter’s on-the-ground
conservation projects.
