Description:
The Great Basin Institute is hiring a Travel Management Intern to assist
with activities related to recreation and travel management on public lands
throughout our region. Sample activities include: 
•       Travel Management Plan inventories: collect data on existing travel 
routes
utilizing hand-held GPS units and download data into an ArcMap program for
analysis. 
•       Maintain Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) route signage: monitor sign 
conditions
and needs, install or remove route open/closed signs, and/or create and
install direction route signs.
•       Monitor areas classified as Wilderness Study Areas: utilize OHVs and 4WD
trucks to travel WSA boundaries to document incursions and/or resource damage. 
•       Route Restoration: assist and coordinate with Nevada Conservation Corps
trail crews to implement travel management projects including, but not
limited to, route decommissioning, revegetation and native seeding of closed
routes, or development of trail barriers using rocks, post and cable fences,
or other types of barriers. 

A portion of the Intern’s time will be dedicated to updating, revising and
maintaining www.NVTrailMaps.com and its associated database. Updates may
include adding to and managing trail specific information, trail/backcountry
ethics (Leave No Trace, Tread Lightly), and clean energy efforts in travel
management (e.g. OHV activities and gas emissions). Additionally, the Intern
will provide educational outreach on the impacts of renewable energy
development for outdoor recreation.

Project area terrain is typical of the Great Basin with wide long valleys
bordered by mountain ranges. Resources present include big game habitat,
Wilderness Study Areas, grazing allotments, abandoned mine lands, historic
and prehistoric cultural sites, and wild horse and burro management areas.
Nevada public lands are mostly used for dispersed types of recreation. The
Technician could be expected to spend several nights a week either field
camping or away from Reno.  

Compensation:  
o       Living Stipend: $18,000
o       Education Award: $5,350

o       Field per diem

Timeline:  
o       February 14, 2011 - February 3, 2012

Qualifications:
o       Coursework in Natural Resources or related field (with interest in
recreation/wilderness management) or equivalent field experience;
o       Knowledge of flora, fauna, land management and natural resources of 
Nevada
desirable – local applicants are encouraged to apply;
o       Experience collecting field data and/or following established field
collection protocols;
o       Knowledge of or ability to learn how to use hand-held GPS unit; 
o       Experience creating maps and manipulating data using ArcGIS, desirable;
o       Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and a compass;
o       Experience writing project reports and/or presenting technical data in 
an
organized and understandable manner;
o       Motivated, self-starter, detail oriented, and possess good 
organizational
skills;
o       Ability to camp and work in remote locations;
o       Willingness to work along or in small groups to accomplish the goals and
mission of GBI and its partner agencies;
o       Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, traverse
uneven terrain and hike cross-country for extended distances (8-10 miles); and
o       Clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely 
operate
an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) or motorcycle, as well as a 4WD pickup on paved
and unpaved roads.
o       Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award
(limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education
awards), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and
federal criminal background checks.
