Provenience square might be something you are looking for. I use this
to evaluate density and uniformity of the vegetation in turf
environment. I also made several squares with pvc pipes and/or woods
and they worked fine in my experiment. Since you are going to use it
in the water, I would recommend  this sturdy square. Check the link
