Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to the Polar knowledge and Policies, Management and Decision-Making Processes in Relation to the Antarctic Sessions at the IPY Montreal 2012: From Knowledge to Action Conference in Montreal, Canada from 22-27 April 2012. Abstracts are now being accepted and the final date for submission is 30 September 2011. For more information on the conference, visit: <http://www.ipy2012montreal.ca/>http://www.ipy2012montreal.ca/.

Sessions 3.4.2 and 3.4.5 - Polar knowledge and Policies, Management and Decision-Making Processes in relation to the Antarctic

The historical isolation of Antarctica has eroded during the last century, and the Region is faced with rapid changes due to climate change, globalization, resource utilization, infrastructure expansion, bioprospecting, fisheries, pollution and tourism, among others. National and international interests exist, but the Antarctic Treaty stipulates that Antarctica will only be used for peaceful and scientific purposes. Results from scientific research and lessons learned from increased national cooperation in Antarctica emerging from the IPY and other efforts are useful to consider when establishing and discussing policies and management strategies with ties to the Antarctic.

This session welcomes contributions on all aspects of knowledge about Antarctic systems (physical, biological, and social) that have contributed or will be used to develop policies, management and decision-making processes in relation to the Antarctic. We will discuss the development of policies, management priorities and protocols dealing with environmental protection in Antarctica, as well as, increased sharing of resources and infrastructure, potential bioprospecting protocols, and other relevant topics.

We hope you consider submitting an abstract to this session and attending the IPY Montreal 2012 Conference. Travel funding is available on a competitive basis for early career researchers.

If you have not attended a conference before, APECS has put together a great resource to help you prepare an abstract, find funding and help with reviewing your abstract before you submit it. Visit <http://apecs.is/conference-tips>http://apecs.is/conference-tips for more information.

Sincerely,
