Postgraduate Research Opportunities

Macroalgal Research & Development

PhD and Honours students are sought to participate in the project "Development of a sustainable South Australian macroalgal aquaculture industry", recently funded by the South Australian Premier's Sciences and Research Fund.

The project is a research collaboration led by the South Australian Research and Development Institute, with the University of Adelaide, Flinders University of South Australia and Science to Manage Uncertainty and has the following clients; Abalone Investments Ltd, Adam and Amos Abalone Foods Pty Ltd, Penrice Soda Products Pty Ltd, PIRSA Aquaculture and Fisheries, Marinova Pty Ltd and Coorong Aquaculture Pty Ltd.

The project initiates a strategy to establish South Australia as a lead state for macroalgal aquaculture production and associated research and development, with significant value adding opportunities likely to follow.

Three primary fields of research are on offer:

- The use of macroalgae as feed for abalone.
Experience or an interest in aquatic animal nutrition is desirable. Key contacts: Assoc. Prof. Jian Qin, Flinders University (Ph. 08 - 8201 3045) and Dr David Stone, SARDI (Ph. 08 - 8207 5350).

- The physiological optima of select macroalgae.
Experience in macroalgal ecology, physiology and culture is desirable. Key contacts: Dr Fred Gurgel, University of Adelaide (Ph. 08 - 8222 9291) and Dr Sasi Nayar, SARDI (Ph. 08 - 8207 5321).

- Ecology of macroalgae in offshore seacages used for abalone farming.
Experience in macroalgal ecology and taxonomy is desirable. Key contacts: Dr Fred Gurgel, University of Adelaide (Ph. 08 - 8222 9291) and Dr Sasi Nayar, SARDI (Ph. 08 - 8207 5321).

On offer is the opportunity to undertake applied research as part of a well resourced larger team for identified industry clients. In addition to the provision of significant project operating funds, each student will receive a top up on their existing university scholarship (a pre-requisite):
PhD - an additional scholarship of $5,000 per annum.
Honours - an additional scholarship of $1,000.

Please submit an application electronically of no more than three typed A4 pages by 23rd September 2011 to the relevant university contact for the primary field of research; Dr Fred Gurgel (fred.gurgel@adelaide,edu.au<mailto:fred.gurgel@adelaide,edu.au>) and Assoc. Prof. Jian Qin ([email protected]<http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/planktonnet/post?postID=wWu5po8qylzPE8DWInmHK1Y_rXrn7C5oCJmwBAQUxXWuiM64OvPffKUePTXPN4IZxXgBlJWDzg2aNyzdPPccvQ>).

The application should clearly outline which research field the student is interested in, whether a PhD or Honours is being undertaken, and the student's capability and enthusiasm
