Job Summary: Provides a high level of
professional expertise and direction in the
coordination of staff and operations in all
aspects of ecological land management for the
Forest Preserve District of Cook County (the
District); assists in the development and
implementation of land management policies that
accommodate the needs of the Districts natural
resources; supervises activities of the
Districts field personnel and trained volunteers
engaged in on-the-ground maintenance and
restoration that effectively restores the health,
beauty and biodiversity of the Districts natural
lands; regularly confers with District staff on
land management issues; supervises the
preparation of site-specific land management
plans, coordinates approved plans and supervises
the implementation of plans performed by other
District personnel, volunteers, interns,
contractors and partner organizations; oversees
staff scheduling, work assignments and budget
preparation for land management activities;
collaborates with Resource Management Department
staff on the prescribed burning program. Builds
relationships and confers with other conservation
based governmental agencies on matters affecting
District lands; coordinates land management
projects with all participants; consults with and
reports to the Director of Resource Management or
his/her designee; and collaborates with the
Resource Specialist III regarding on the ground work.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
· Must possess a Bachelors or higher level
degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural
Resource Management or equivalent area.
· Must have six (6) years professional work
experience in the field operations of ecosystem
management with a private, municipal, state or
federal agency, at least three (3) years of which
were in a supervisory capacity.
· Must possess a current valid Drivers License.
· Must possess a certificate of completion of the
National Wildfire Coordinating Group course work
S130/S190 OR a certificate of completion of the
Chicago Wilderness Midwest Ecological Prescription Burn Crew Member Training.
· Must possess a current Pesticide Applicators
License OR official documentation verifying that
the examination has been taken and passed.
Proof of education, certifications and licenses
will be required at time of interview.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Professional work experience in
biodiversity-focused ecosystem restoration with
experience in the incorporation of hydrology,
botany and zoology into decision-making.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
Ability to provide in-depth knowledge and
expertise in all areas related to the
preservation, management and conservation of
natural resources as it applies to the District.
Knowledge of current conservation practices as
applied to forests, woodlands, wetlands, prairies
and savannas. Knowledge in the care and
preservation of natural plant and animal species
and the appropriate management techniques
suitable for regional habitat restoration and
management as it pertains to the Districts needs
and operations. Knowledge of the ecosystems of
the Chicago area and the central Midwest. Skill
in supervising, managing and coordinating staff,
contractors and trained volunteers to fulfill
management goals and objectives. Skill in
maintaining a high level of efficiency and morale
while supervising and interacting with staff,
volunteers and the general public. Ability to
effectively communicate (verbally and in writing)
both professionally and to the general public.
Ability to organize and execute with dedication
the mission of the District. Ability to manage
numerous projects at one time, skill in directing
written and oral instructions effectively and the
ability to follow safety procedures for
prescribed burns. Ability to work outdoors in
wilderness conditions and in inclement weather.
Ability to perform various types of physical
exertion, including, but not limited to, lifting,
pulling, pushing, and moving objects of moderate
to heavy weight. Ability to travel to work
assignments for which the employee may be
required to provide his or her own means of
transportation. Ability to work extended,
flexible, weekend and holiday hours as needed.
MUST BE A RESIDENT OF COOK COUNTY OR ESTABLISH
RESIDENCY IN COOK COUNTY WITHIN SIX (6) MONTHS OF
EMPLOYMENT AND REMAIN A RESIDENT AT ALL TIMES
DURING EMPLOYMENT WITH THE DISTRICT
