QinetiQ North America is an AA/EEO Employer Location: Fort Irwin, CA Responsibilities: Natural Resource Specialist (NRS) monitors and conserves biodiversity at Fort Irwin, a large, heavily used military training base in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. NRS will assist in the study of genetic origins, life processes, behavior and diseases of desert ecosystem flora and fauna. Will collect and analyze biological data in order to contribute valuable findings to the field of plant identification and classification, flora and fauna disease control, and land conservation practices. Provide extensive and accurate field research. Will also research, observe, analyze and monitor plant and animal habitats in a given region to determine population, pollution, health and predator-prey dynamic. Will conduct government research in the field to better understand an ecosystem. May also be requested to lead a team of researchers. Specific Job Responsibilities: Identify individual plant species and communities in the Mojave Desert ecosystem. Collect wildlife flora and fauna inventory/survey data as instructed by full time permanent staff. Be able to show and explain trends in plant mortality or survival rates by analyzing data collected in the field. Conduct natural resources inventories during approved times and seasons to assure proper levels of data are collected and meet the submission goals set forth by the client. Write clear, concise reports on the findings of the natural resources inventories that are submitted on time and meet the clients approval. Work long days in sometimes inclement weather in rough, rocky, and desert terrain and collect data in extremely windy, hot, cold, or dusty conditions. Work well in a military environment and refrain from any opposition towards the US Army or actions naturally occurring on a military base. Assist in providing biologists plan and conduct sensitive species survey reports/plans; enforce compliance with environmental regulations; write and edit reports and management plans in line with state and Federal guidelines; and educate the public and military about desert conservation. Qualifications: Requires High School diploma or equivalent - prefer Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in biology, botany, ecology or a related undergraduate degree, and 0-1 years of related experience. Special preference will be given to applicants with experience living or working in the Mojave Desert and/or specifically with Lane Mountain milk vetch, desert tortoise, Mohave ground squirrel, Mojave fringe-toed lizard, coyotes and ravens. Excellent biological writing skills and an aptitude for data collection and analysis are required. The NRS must be able to pay extreme attention to detail, work independently and possess strong written and oral communication skills. Will be required to work long days in extreme desert weather conditions. Work will require physical stamina.
