Workshop on Quantitative Landscape Ecology and Environmental
Sustainability (QLEES)

A 5-day workshop on Quantitative Landscape Ecology and Environmental
Sustainability is being held at the University of KwaZulu-Natal,
Durban, South Africa, on July 3 – 7, 2012.

The QLEES workshop is part of the U.S.-African Biomathematics
Initiative workshop series focusing on biomathematical challenges
arising from African issues with global implications. This workshop
provides a forum for practitioners devoted to researching critical
applications of landscape ecology with particular focus on
sustainability of ecosystem services and issues related to global
climate change. The workshop also features tutorial sessions to
provide early career participants with the appropriate background to
ensure participants will get the most out of workshop events.

Location: University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa

Call for Papers:
QLEES Workshop organizers seek submission of papers on original
research in areas of quantitative landscape ecology and environmental
sustainability related to the following topics: remote sensing
technologies, automated environmental monitoring technologies,
automated animal movement monitoring technologies, data management and
processing, pattern recognition and landscape classification methods,
GIS mapping technologies and landscape ecology, methods in spatial
ecology, methods in movement ecology, methods of analysis to address
issues of ecosystem sustainability, measurement of biodiversity, and
indicators of ecosystem health.

To contribute a paper or a poster, please send title/abstract to
Christine Spassione at [email protected] no later than April
1, 2012 with an indication of your preference as to oral or poster
presentation. You will be notified of acceptance of your paper as soon
as possible after you submit it.

Graduate students interested in attending the workshop can apply for
financial support by visiting the website
http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/Workshops/Landscape/applic1.html and
completing the application process. The Deadline for Full
Consideration is March 1, 2012.
Review of graduate student applications begins as soon as there are
applications.

For questions or more information, see the website
http://dimacs.rutgers.edu/Workshops/Landscape/ or contact Eugene
Fiorini, Associate Director of DIMACS and Program Coordinator
([email protected]).

The Workshop is organized by the Center for Discrete Mathematics and
Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS), the Mathematical Biosciences
Institute (MBI), and the University of KwaZulu-Natal with funding
provided by the US National Science Foundation, the Society for
Mathematical Biology, the International Council for Industrial and
Applied Mathematics, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and other
sponsors.
