Kids Environmental Education Program

Educational opportunities in the community are limited, and don’t adequately
address the reality that these children live amongst a remarkably bio-
diverse and endangered ecosystem, which offers both unique opportunities and
challenges. Education and the awakening to new concepts and ideas will open
a door for them into a more complex planet and will give them a few initial
but crucial tools to encourage them into further individual and social
development.

About the project

This project focuses on the young members of the community of Camarones in
the Coastal Forests of Ecuador, and it aims to provide assisted tools to
help them in finding new alternatives for their development and helping them
in building an intellectual patrimony related to natural resources
valorization, sustainable agricultural practices, forest conservation, wild
life, flora, art, languages, etc; to provide them an alternative vocational
skill so that they have more opportunities to contribute responsibly to
their families and society.
The project includes a free environmental education program, English
lessons, drawing, painting, theatre, dancing, handicrafts, etc.; library,
community projects and vocational training.

Children

The community of Camarones is inhabited by 63 families, including 132
children, from infants to late adolescents. Most children spend some time in
school, but also help their families work the land from a very young age.
Location
The community of Camarones is a small agricultural community in the coastal
province of Manabí, located within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean and
the Jama-Coaque Rainforest Reserve. The community is also with a short bus
ride to the beach towns of Canoa, Jama, and Pedernales.

Lodging

Lodging is in the newly-established Volunteer House in the center of the
community, which includes office and library, kitchen and bathroom. A
vegetable and fruit orchard is right in the back yard, alongside a beautiful
river bank. The Volunteer House is a short walk away from the school.

Project Activities
1. Learning Center.
The Learning Center is one of the primary tasks for volunteers. The
community library is a place for children, ages 6 to 100, to come and enjoy
the infinite possibilities of the reading universe. Every book – even every
page - will provide them a gate for receiving new impressions and exploring
new people, places, characters, and cultures, and the possibility to awaken
to new ideas and concepts. The library provides children a safe and quiet
area where they can do their homework, read, learn, and research with the
help of a wide variety of texts, books, magazines, encyclopedias, and
electronic media. Volunteers will read with the children, assist with
homework, organize games and fun activities for the children, teach, improve
the project facilities and assist local staff. Encouragement from the
volunteers, with a lot of positive reinforcement, is also an important
aspect of the program.
The Learning Center program also provides to the children some skills that
they will need to acquire en route to a productive adulthood. This is an
important step in helping break the cycle of poverty and limited education
that persists in the community. The children are taught Environmental
education, flora and fauna identification, English (eco-tourism related),
computer skills, cooking, weaving, ceramics, etc.
Other activities include theater, music, painting, drawing, writing,
dancing, games and excursions over the region.
2. Free English Education Programe.
Volunteers will teach English inside the school and at the Learning Center.
Being a community on the fringe of an endangered forest, eco-tourism will
become a very important element of the local economy, and the ability to
speak English will empower the children of the community to take advantage
of new opportunities as adults.
