Chris -- TDWG ran a bioblitz event a couple of years ago and tested a bunch of phone apps just for the case you are asking for -- the ability to take a picture, and tag it with species, geolocation, and upload. You can access all of the apps they looked at here: http://bioblitz.tdwg.org/
