DNR Policy Director Exempt, full-time
Recruitment # 2013-03-5395 Salary Range: $7,000 - $8,166 per month plus comprehensive benefits package ($6,790 - $7,921 with 3% temporary reduction until June 29, 2013) Location: Olympia, Washington Open until filled; First review begins March 25, 2013. As a direct report to the Commissioner of Public Lands, the Policy Director is responsible for assisting the Commissioner, the DNR Executive Management Team, and the Department with advice on major, strategic issues related to the agency's overall policy direction. This includes ensuring the overall soundness and consistency of agency policy decisions at the executive level, in the context of decisions based on sound science, promoting resource sustainability, and making decisions in a transparent and accountable manner. The Policy Director leads a team that serves the Commissioner of Public Lands and the Department. This team consists of four permanent and multiple temporary or project staff. The Director leads special executive projects and serves on steering committees for major projects and major policy plans. The Director represents the Commissioner of Public Lands and the Department in policy-level external governmental groups and initiatives. The Director plays a lead role in administration of the Department's Strategic Plan. The Director manages the Department's formal system of written policy and procedures. The Director maintains effective relationships with a network of diverse stakeholders. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: *A bachelor's degree in natural sciences, environmental policy or management, political science, social sciences, or a related field; Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced degree in ecology, climatology, or a related field; *Five years professional experience with natural resource or environmental policy and/or management. Preference will be given to candidates whose professional experience prepares them for work on adapting to a changing climate; *Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts and relationships with diverse stakeholders; *Excellent oral and written communications skills; *Strong public presentation skills; *Ability to develop short- and long-range plans at strategic and tactical levels; *Demonstrated ability to lead executive-level projects and lead a team of staff; *Ability to work independently or on ad hoc, cross-organizational teams; *Demonstrated skills in strategic analysis and critical thinking; *Strong work ethic and commitment to public service.
