A M.S. assistantship will be available in the Department of Natural Resource
Ecology and Management (http://www.nrem.iastate.edu/) at Iowa State University,
beginning January 2014 or May 2014. While pursuing a M.S. degree, the student
will conduct research with ISU faculty and the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources to develop a wetland condition index for the Iowa prairie pothole
region. This project, funded by USEPA, requires sampling and analysis of
biological communities (plants, invertebrates, fishes, amphibians) and physical
parameters (contaminants, watershed land use) in 45 wetlands over a two-year
period. Statistical analysis will be used to identify effective condition
indicator variables, and develop an assessment protocol for monitoring wetlands
and evaluating their responses to management actions.
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in an ecological or biological field.
Coursework and field experience in aquatic ecology are highly desirable.
Candidates with prior research experience, demonstrated written and oral
communication skills, analytical skills, and strong academic credentials are
preferred. Applicants must be highly motivated, demonstrate a strong work
ethic, and be physically capable and willing to work in demanding outdoor
conditions.

The student will receive a stipend of $19,632 per year throughout their 2-3
year program, with benefits and a 50% in-state tuition waiver included.

Application review will begin October 21, 2013. If interested, please send a
pre-application (cover letter, résumé, unofficial transcripts, GRE scores, and
contact information of 3 references) to Dr. Timothy Stewart
