Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to submit abstracts for the Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting
Session 34: Metapopulation and metacommunity approaches to research and
management of fragmented aquatic systems. It is held in Portland, Oregon May
18-23, 2014. Abstracts are due Feb 7.

Session description:
It has long been recognized that the dynamics of populations and communities
(including diversity) are related to local environmental conditions and
interspecific interactions. Many aquatic systems (lotic, lentic, and
wetland) are fragmented over space, requiring approaches that also integrate
local and regional spatial factors including dispersal. These metapopulation
and metacommunity approaches show a high capacity for furthering our
understanding of local patterns in populations and communities, and the use
of “meta” theoretical approaches has increased dramatically in recent years.
Advancing our knowledge in these areas is of critical importance to
researching and managing aquatic systems. A further understanding of the
link between population and community dynamics in aquatic systems will aid
in the management and mitigation of consequences stemming from habitat
fragmentation, pollution, climate change, invasive species colonization, and
other sources of environmental degradation. This session will attract
attendees interested in how metapopulation and metacommunity approaches can
help research and manage a broad range or spatially-fragmented lake, stream,
and wetland systems. The session will draw from community assembly, neutral,
metapopulation, and metacommunity theory.
