RESEARCH FELLOW

Position Overview:
The Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC) is part of the College’s Research and 
Outreach Center network, and serves as the primary research and education 
forest for the University of Minnesota. It is located two hours north of the 
St. Paul campus, and 30 minutes south of Duluth, MN. It is a regional hub 
for forestry research, undergraduate and graduate field instruction in 
natural resources, and extensive outreach and professional training 
programs.
This position will focus on several research and outreach projects based out 
of the CFC, with responsibilities encompassing experimental design, 
implementation, evaluation, analysis of research projects, preparation of 
publications and presentations, and professional training workshop design 
and delivery. There will be a strong emphasis on communication of climate 
change adaptation and silvicultural principles and practices to a broad 
professional community. Further, the Center and this position are closely 
linked with the College’s Department of Forest Resources based in St. Paul 
and it’s associated faculty located there, at the CFC, and at the North 
Central Research and Outreach Center in Grand Rapids. The position may 
include some supervisory responsibilities.

Research Responsibilities (60%):
•  Collaborate with research and management partners on climate change and 
forest management related research and outreach projects
•  Collaborate with faculty and other scientists in addressing specific 
topics that may range from broad-scale climate vulnerability assessment to 
development of silvicultural prescriptions for adaptation
•  Collaborate with scientists in developing and implementing field studies, 
including establishment, data collection, analysis, and synthesis of data
•  Collaborate with scientists on publications and presentation of research 
findings at professional meetings
•  Work effectively with scientists to synthesize research information and 
results into non-technical language for a variety of audiences
•  Other duties as assigned
 
Outreach Responsibilities (40%):
•  Synthesize and communicate information on interactions between climate, 
forest ecology, and forest management
•  Design, organize, and assist in delivering a variety of workshops where 
research is translated to multiple stakeholder groups
•  Other duties as assigned
 
Required Qualifications:  
MS in Natural Resources or closely related field
Experience conducting ecological field research
Experience with silviculture and/or the NEPA process
Demonstrated ability in translating scientific research into non-technical 
language
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, and presentation 
skills
Demonstrated ability to meet and manage deadlines
Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple work 
projects and types of activities
Demonstrated ability to work with accuracy, precision, and attention to 
detail
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both technical and non-
technical terminology at a variety of skill levels
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries 
and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff
Proficiency with computer applications including word processing, 
spreadsheet, and database applications
Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to meet the University of 
Minnesota’s vehicle use requirementsNature of Appointment: 

Nature of Appointment:
This is a full-time Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) position, 
12-month (A-term), annually renewable (K-type) position with continuation 
contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Any 
offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a 
background check. Reports to the Cloquet Forestry Center Director of 
Operations.
