Overview:

The Forest Ecosystems & Climate lab at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology 
Institute (SCBI), an 
affiliate of the Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS)-ForestGEO network, 
is seeking 1-2 interns 
to participate in local and global forest ecology research, including field 
research at the CTFS-
ForestGEO plot at SCBI and synthesis of global data. A candidate to participate 
in local field research, 
including automated measurements of tree growth and water use, is desired 
starting as soon as 
possible. We also seek a candidate with interest and ability to work with 
global forest ecosystems 
data. The internship position(s) will be configured according to research needs 
and candidatesÂ’ 
interests and abilities. 

Qualifications & Position Information:

The ideal candidate will have a bachelorÂ’s degree in a relevant field, strong 
quantitative and data 
management skills (including basic programming in R or Matlab), effective 
scientific writing ability, 
some ecological/botanical research experience, and enthusiasm for forest 
ecology research. These 
internships are particularly well suited for (but not limited to) candidates 
seeking research 
experience prior to graduate school. The position(s) will be compensated with a 
stipend sufficient to 
cover living expenses (minimum $1,500/month, depending on experience and need 
for housing). 
On-site housing may be available. Initial appointment will be 3-6 months with 
potential extension 
contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
The SCBI campus is located near the north entrance of the Shenandoah National 
Park about 60 miles 
west of Washington, D.C., in the hills outside of Front Royal, VA

The Forest Ecosystems & Climate lab (led by Kristina Anderson-Teixeira; 
<http://www.ctfs.si.edu/group/Ecosystems+and+Climate/>) conducts a range of 
research with the 
overall goal of understanding the dynamics of forest ecosystems worldwide in an 
era of global 
change.
