Overview

The Forest Ecosystems & Climate lab at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology
Institute (SCBI), a part of the Center for Tropical Forest Science
(CTFS)-ForestGEO network, is seeking 1-2 interns to participate in local and
global forest ecology research, including field research at the
CTFS-ForestGEO plot at SCBI and synthesis of global data. A candidate to
participate in local field research, including automated measurements of
tree growth and water use, is desired starting as soon as possible. We also
seek a candidate with interest and ability to work with global forest
ecosystems data. The internship position(s) will be configured according to
research needs and candidates’ interests and abilities.

Qualifications & Position Information

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field,
strong quantitative and data management skills (including basic programming
in R or Matlab), effective scientific writing ability, some
ecological/botanical research experience, and enthusiasm for forest ecology
research. These internships are particularly well suited for (but not
limited to) candidates seeking research experience prior to graduate school.
The position(s) will be compensated with a stipend sufficient to cover
living expenses (minimum $1,500/month, depending on experience and need for
housing). On-site housing may be available. Initial appointment will be 3-6

The SCBI campus is located near the north entrance of the Shenandoah
National Park about 60 miles west of Washington, D.C., in the hills outside
of Front Royal, VA (<http://nationalzoo.si.edu/scbi/>). The Forest
Ecosystems & Climate lab (led by Kristina Anderson-Teixeira;
<http://www.ctfs.si.edu/group/Ecosystems+and+Climate/>), which is part of
the CTFS-ForestGEO network (<www.ctfs.si.edu>), conducts a range of research
with the overall goal of understanding the dynamics of forest ecosystems
worldwide in an era of global change.
