What's Happening Now? Continuous Sensors and the Ongoing Revolution in the
Hydrologic Sciences

Session ID#: 2037

Session Description:
The acquisition of continuous concentration data has lagged behind the
collection of continuous flow and climate data that transformed the hydrologic
sciences over the last 50 years. As in situ aquatic sensors have begun to
remedy this divergence in measurement time scales, they are enabling the next
revolution, providing refined inferences about known processes, uncovering new
ones, and highlighting rich patterns of variation that occur in response to
dynamic and stochastic drivers. This session will highlight recent progress
towards obtaining robust sensor measurements for ecosystem processes. We
invite contributions that test general ecosystem theory, demonstrate the
utility of high resolution data streams for model parameterization and
validation, and explore the controls on production and retention of solutes and
sediments in both natural and man-made systems.
