Background: The USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station and the Finger Lakes National Forest are evaluating methods to restore degraded riparian habitats on the Forest. As part of the study, we are reintroducing Dutch elm disease-tolerant American elm to the site. We plan to hire a part-time technician to help establish the study and collect data throughout the 2015 growing season through a collaborative project with the Ohio State University.
Job Description: The seasonal field technician will be responsible for assisting a team of collaborators in establishing the study in early May. Throughout the growing season, the technician will be responsible for collecting data on herbaceous and woody vegetation, insects, as well as collecting soil samples and entering data. The technician will primarily work alone. The candidate will need his/her own transportation, and will be reimbursed for mileage incurred while fulfilling the responsibilities of this position. Housing is not provided, therefore we are seeking candidates who live locally. The position will start in early May and last through early September, with part-time hours totaling 6-8 full weeks of work throughout this period. Compensation: Between $10.50 and $13.00/hour; commensurate with experience. Minimum Requirements: -Completion of at least two years of an undergraduate degree in ecology or a related field. -Experience collecting data. -Proficiency in herbaceous and woody plant identification. -Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. -Independent and able to work with little oversight. -Enthusiasm for outdoor work in conditions including heat, rain, biting/stinging insects, and poison ivy.
