The Wildlife Epidemiology Lab in the Department of Comparative Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois is looking to fill a 3 year (36 months) fellowship position for a graduate DVM to pursue a PhD. The candidate would lead an investigation establishing the wellness of free-ranging herps in Illinois. This project would establish criteria for health assessment of three reptiles or amphibians in different Wildlife Action Plan campaigns. The candidate will conduct field studies, and build statistical models that integrate hematologic, plasma biochemical, pathogen prevalence, and protein electrophoretic profiles with ecological and environmental factors. The work is intended to generate baseline information that will identify the conservation actions/best practices that could be incorporated in to the Action Plan and be used when reintroducing animals or restoring habitat to minimize disease risk and enhance health.
Required or Desired Skills: The candidate must possess a DVM, advanced training in wildlife or zoological medicine and epidemiology is welcome. Special consideration will be given to individuals that have statistical, molecular diagnostic, and geospatial training. The candidate must be an effective oral and written communicator, productive in a team environment, and demonstrate a proficiency in publishing findings. The position would start in August 2015.
