The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land
Management, Southern Nevada District, is recruiting for three Wilderness
Technicians to assist with field going tasks. The Intern will contribute to
the management, protection, and conservation of public lands by enhancing
the ability of professional BLM staff to collect information necessary for
making informed decisions regarding the management and protection of
Wilderness in Southern Nevada.



Wilderness program duties may include any or all of the following:
decommissioning illegal routes, trail maintenance, removing obsolete
developments, conducting weed eradication, conducting small site
restoration, installing signs, limbing motorized routes, constructing
staging areas, collecting GPS data, conducting wilderness characteristics
monitoring and inventory, monitoring Wilderness and WSA’s for violations
and other tasks associated with managing, and protecting and restoring
wilderness and WSA’s. The technician may be required to camp alone in
remote locations.



*Location:* Las Vegas, NV



*Compensation and Timeline:*

o   This is an AmeriCorps position, and members will receive a living
stipend of $4,500. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to
members bi-weekly throughout their term of service. Upon completion of the
12-week AmeriCorps term of service members shall receive a Segal AmeriCorps
Education Award valued at $1,493 that can be used to pay off qualified
student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college or
program.

o   12-week term of service beginning June 15, 2015 (or as soon as possible
upon applicant availability);

o   Full time, 40 hours per week.



*Qualifications:*

   - Coursework in the Natural Resources or related field (with interest in
   recreation/wilderness management);
   - Experience collecting field data and/or following established field
   collection protocols;
   - Knowledge of or ability to learn how to use hand-held Trimble GPS
   unit;
   - Experience creating maps and manipulating data using ArcGIS, desirable;
   - Experience writing project reports and/or presenting technical data in
   an organized and understandable manner, desirable;
   - Motivated, self-starter, detail oriented, and possess good
   organizational skills;
   - Ability to camp and work in remote locations;
   - Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, traverse
   uneven terrain and hike cross-country for extended distances (8-10 miles)
   - Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and a compass;
   - Appreciation and understanding of Wilderness benefits and
   opportunities; and
   - Possess clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with experience
   operating a full-size 4WD pickup on- and off-road; and
   - Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or
   legal resident alien status, (2) must be at least 17 years of age and a US
   citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED (or be willing to
   achieve this before using education award), (3) eligible to receive an
   AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime, or equivalent of
   two full-time terms of service), and (4) pass National Sex Offender Public
   Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
