The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management’s Bishop Field Office, is recruiting an experienced GIS Technician to work cooperatively with BLM staff to provide geographic information system (GIS) mapping and data analysis support related to conservation, restoration, transportation management and other natural resource management projects. The GIS Technician will perform duties related to a broad spectrum of projects including, but not limited to, wildlife management, travel management, wilderness management, and abandoned mine land (AML) hazard mitigation. More specifically, the GIS Technician will be involved in the following projects: - Completing spatial analysis and compilation of data related to wildlife management, including creating maps and compiling data for long-term survey datasets. - Work on projects implementing the Bi-State Action Plan for greater sage-grouse. This includes learning to use the Conservation Planning Tool and applying this to proposed projects identified in the action plan. - Assisting with the creation of maps for AML NEPA projects. - Digitizing paper route maps that are authorized as the Travel and Transportation system under the 1993 Bishop RMP and creating a layer in ArcGIS. - Quality checking and improving Ground Transportation Linear Features (GTLF) dataset. - Organizing data and creating maps that assist with wilderness and wilderness study area management, including wilderness character and wilderness characteristics monitoring. *Location* The Bishop Field Office manages 750,000 acres of unique vestiges of wild California, emphasizing conservation, education and partnerships. Public lands in Mono and Inyo counties span the length of the eastern Sierra from Topaz Lake to Owens Lake in a region dominated by public agency lands. Centrally located between Reno, NV and Los Angeles, CA, Bishop offers excellent access to numerous outdoor activities including rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and skiing/snowboarding (among other activities). Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Death Valley National Parks, as well as the Inyo, Sequoia and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests are easily accessible. *Compensation & Timeline* - Rate of Pay - $23.00/hour - Medical benefits (health and dental) - Start Date: 1-year appointment beginning in August 2015, pending availability and completion of DOI Background Investigation - Full time, 40 hours per week *Qualifications* - Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, geography, or closely related field with coursework and/or experience that demonstrate understanding of the principles of geographic information systems (GIS); applicants with advanced degree encouraged to apply; - Experience using ArcGIS to create maps, analyze data, and organize layers, required; - Knowledge and prior experience using ArcGIS thru Citrix interface, including Spatial Analyst, Data Driven Pages, Spatial Database Engines, and ArcGIS Online extensions will be highly beneficial; - Knowledge of the eastern Sierra region, including common plants, wildlife, and/or geology/topography, desirable; - Prior experience working collaboratively in a multi-agency environment, desirable; - Ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team; and - Effectively communicate, both written and orally, with a diverse audience. Although the majority of the work will be in an indoor office setting, occasional field-site visits are possible. Thus, the following qualifications are also desirable: - Ability to navigate and collect data using handheld GPS units; - Experience utilizing a compass and reading topographic map; - Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads; - Ability to live and work in rural and remote field and office environment; and - Physically fit to work outdoors, carry up to 50 pounds of personal and/or field equipment, and withstand the rigors of a mountain and/or desert environment in all seasons. - Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to BLM human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position. *How to Apply* Qualified and interested applicants should forward a cover letter, their résumé, and a list of three professional references to Amy Gladding, GBI HR Coordinator, at [email protected].
