Join us at the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) conference to
kick off a faculty mentoring network focused on how to use data-driven
modules designed by the InTeGrate Project in undergraduate classrooms.

Dates & Location: The kick-off will take place Wednesday, November 11th from
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM at the National Association for Biology Teachers
Professional Development Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. The faculty
mentoring network will continue online to support the customization and
implementation of activities in your course during the Spring 2016 semester.

Description: InTeGrate
(http://serc.carleton.edu/integrate/teaching_materials/) is joining forces
with QUBES (http://qubeshub.org) to work with biology faculty who are
interested in field testing existing interdisciplinary curriculum modules
that focus on sustainability and climate change. The InTeGrate modules were
developed by interdisciplinary teams of faculty from diverse higher
educational settings. All modules address Earth-related grand challenges
that face society and are designed to develop student ability to address
interdisciplinary problems related to sustainability. The InTeGrate suite of
high-quality, hands-on, data-driven educational modules is suitable for use
in a variety of undergraduate classrooms. Participating teachers will be
encouraged to mix and match parts of modules and customize them for use in
their classrooms.

Example modules (see http://serc.carleton.edu/integrate/teaching_materials/
for additional description):
1. Environmental Justice and Fresh Water
2. Interactions between Water, Earth’s Surface, and Human Activity
3. Map Your Hazards
4. Climate of Change
5. Natural Hazards and Risks
6. A Growing Concern (plants and biomes)

Mentors:
Jennifer Hanselman, Department of Biology, Westfield State University
Hannah H. Scherer, Department of Agricultural, Leadership, and Community
Education, Virginia Tech
Sam Donovan, Department of Biology, University of Pittsburgh
Alison Hale, Department of Biology, University of Pittsburgh

How to Apply:
Applications are available at: http://goo.gl/forms/urzuE0dDnX. Applications
are due September 25, 2015. We are actively seeking participation from
faculty at diverse institution types and serving diverse student
populations. Accepted applicants will be notified by October 1st. A total
of 12 participants will be selected.

Commitment:
To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate InTeGrate materials
into at least three class periods (or equivalent) in their teaching during
the spring 2016 semester. Participants must also be able to commit ~1 hour
per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants
around the customization and implementation of the teaching materials.
Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent
work on adapting and reviewing modules. Participants must be able to attend
the NABT conference Nov 11-14 in Rhode Island
(http://www.nabt.org/conferences/). The expenses of the workshop and
mentoring network will be covered by NSF grant funding. However,
participants will need to cover their own travel and registration expenses
to attend NABT (accepted participants will receive the early bird
registration rate). Faculty who use InTeGrate materials and submit an
instructor story reporting on their implementation will receive a $500 stipend.
