The Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa
Barbara (UCSB), invites applications to fill a tenure-track Assistant
Professor position in the area of Ecological Economics.
The ideal candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in ecological or
environmental economics (or a related field), have a promising record of
scholarly achievement, and a strong interest in undergraduate teaching and
mentorship. The candidate will be expected to develop a leading research
program which compliments existing program strengths in energy and climate
change, environmental justice, ecosystems and conservation, food and
agriculture, and water. He/she will be expected to collaborate with faculty
from other disciplines, and contribute to discussion about the role of
economics in environmental policy, with a focus on ecology and society. The
successful candidate will teach a lower division undergraduate course on
economics for Environmental Studies majors, upper division courses in
Ecological & Environmental Economics, and Economics in Environmental Policy,
and develop graduate training.
UCSB's Environmental Studies Program is an interdisciplinary undergraduate
program that was founded in the aftermath of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil
spill. It has maintained a position of national leadership since then,
graduating over 6000 students. The program has a longstanding commitment to
integrative research and teaching, and interdisciplinary balance among
natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and applied professions. UCSB
has a wide range of departments, programs, and centers that work in the
environmental arena—including a large community of economists interested in
environment and natural resources housed in the Bren School. The successful
candidate will be expected to be involved in training graduate students
through affiliation with one or more other programs, while helping to build
an interdisciplinary PhD program on Environment and Society. We thus seek
candidates who will contribute to our interdisciplinary emphasis while
building on our tradition of outreach to other programs. Further information
about the Environmental Studies Program can be found at: http://es.ucsb.edu/
Applicants should submit a letter of interest, Curriculum Vitae, research
and teaching statements, a job-market paper and the names and contact
information (including e-mail addresses and phone numbers) for 3-5 referees
by Nov. 20, 2015.
All materials should be submitted via the online UC Recruit system:
https://recruit.ap.ucsb.edu/apply/JPF00574. A first round of interviews will
occur in early January. Finalists will be invited to campus based on the
outcome of first round interviews.
The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to
the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research,
teaching and service.
