Research Specialist (Arboretum - 2015) Position Title: Research Specialist Department: Science & Research
Objective: Research position in plant ecology in the lab of Dr. David Burke to conduct research examining how environmental change affects both plants and soil microbes in forest systems. This is a half time position based at the Horticulture Science Center. Supervisor: Research Chair Works with Scientists and Researchers at Case Western Reserve University Works with Scientists and Researchers at Kent State University Work Location: The Holden Arboretum – Kirtland, Ohio – less than 30 miles east of Cleveland. Encompassing more than 3,600 acres of cultivated gardens, woody plant collections and natural forested areas The Holden Arboretum / Cleveland Botanical Garden recently integrated, making the organization the 13th largest public garden in the U.S. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Conduct research examining how environmental change affects both plants and soil microbes in forest systems. Requirements: Must pass a criminal background check and substance screening Master’s degree in biology or related discipline at a minimum Demonstrates interest in plant biology or soil ecology Ability to travel within the US Qualifications: Previous laboratory research experience (Preferred) Good laboratory and field skills. Use and proficiency in molecular laboratory techniques is a plus. Work Environment Work outdoors in temperature ranges typical for Northeast Ohio Work in and around poison ivy, poison sumac, water, mud, brush and stinging insects Physical Demands Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation: Stand and/or sit for extended periods of time Hand and arm dexterity Walk and work on wet, uneven, slippery terrain Regular lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs.
