Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies - Fall 2016

The Environmental Studies Department at Wofford College, a four-year 
undergraduate Phi Beta Kappa liberal arts institution in Spartanburg, South 
Carolina, invites applications for a new tenure-track position at the assistant 
professor level. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in sustainability studies, 
earth systems science, environmental science, environmental studies, or a 
related field, awarded by September 2016 when the position begins. The 
successful candidate must be a dynamic teacher with demonstrated experience and 
enthusiasm for interdisciplinary teaching and sustainability research. He or 
she will actively engage in the department's valued tradition of field studies 
and experiential education. The ideal candidate will also embrace the 
collaborative spirit that characterizes the college.

Teaching commitments will include interdisciplinary courses at all levels, an 
introductory science course with an experiential field/laboratory component, 
and topical courses in the candidate's area(s) of expertise. The candidate will 
also involve students in their own research, and mentor a range of senior 
capstone projects that reflect the diverse interests of environmental studies 
students. The teaching load includes 2-3 courses each semester and a 4-week 
January focused-study Interim term.

A principal responsibility of this position will be to help lead a significant 
new sustainability initiative at the college. The successful candidate will use 
quantitative expertise to help analyze and improve the sustainability of campus 
operations (e.g. energy, food systems, waste streams, landscape evolution). 
Demonstrated ability to engage students in those activities will be a distinct 
advantage in the selection process.

Our Environmental Studies Department provides the foundation for students to 
address the complex environmental problems of their generation, recognizing 
that approaches from the humanities and arts, natural sciences and social 
sciences are all needed for effective local, regional and global change. Field 
experiences foster the wonder and love for natural environments that motivate 
our students' personal and professional choices. Environmental Studies BA and 
BS graduates have entered the fields of conservation, law, business, energy, 
land and resource management, environmental science, and engineering, among
