Turnstone Environmental Consultants, Inc. is currently hiring a crew leader and one additional technician for an avian predation monitoring program in the Lower Columbia River Estuary. These positions are considered full-time seasonal. The fieldwork involves daily surveys via boat, foot, and/or aircraft to monitor Caspian tern and cormorant colonies and ongoing management activities such as installing fencing and collecting eggs. The crew leader will also supervise field crew activities and review and submit data on a daily basis. It will be necessary to work long hours and odd schedules, including regular weekend work. Safety is of the upmost importance, and technician must be comfortable being out on the water for long periods of time. Strong physical fitness, including the ability to carry up to 50 lbs. and swim in case of emergency, are also necessary.
Salary is $2000-3000/month. Group housing will be provided out of Astoria, Oregon. Position begins ASAP and no later than the end of the second week of April, and runs through mid-August. Opportunities to work on other projects after the end of the season may be available for the excellent employee. A company-owned work vehicle will provided. QUALIFICATIONS: A completed B.S. degree in wildlife biology (or a closely-related field), 1+ seasons of field experience, and previous supervisory experience is strongly preferred. Caspian tern and cormorant or other waterbird experience is highly desirable but not required if the applicant has strong field skills, basic bird identification skills, and an interest in avian biology. An ideal candidate will possess all of the following characteristics: - A consistent track record of working in a safe and efficient manner. - Strong physical fitness and the ability to work long hours on a boat, even in inclement weather. - Working knowledge of western bird identification by sight and sound. - The ability and willingness to spend long hours in the field and work odd hours, including early morning. - Integrity, quality, and accuracy in adhering to scientific protocols. - The ability to record accurate, legible and reliable field data. - Flexible, detail-oriented, resourceful, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team. - A valid driver's license and the ability to operate a 4WD vehicle.
