The David E. Shi Center for Sustainability:
Over the past few decades Furman University has established itself as a higher
education sustainability leader. Sustainability has been infused across the
university curriculum and campus operations and has served as a strategic
pillar in our identity and mission. We aspire to have faculty and students
engage in interdisciplinary teaching and research in conjunction with community
organizations and leaders that aim at solving the regional sustainability
challenges we face. Today’s sustainability problems and challenges can no
longer be addressed by individual disciplines, but require more holistic,
systems based approaches that draw from expertise and experience across all
disciplines and stakeholders.

The David E. Shi Center for Sustainability, named after Furman’s 10th
president, is an interdisciplinary academic center on campus that promotes the
study and practice of sustainability on campus and in the greater community. A
former Southern Living Showcase home, the Center was established in 2008 to
foster collaboration among educators, students, and community leaders around
real world and regional challenges that sit at the nexus of social, economic,
and environmental systems.
