Chair, Biological and Environmental Sciences

Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals
interested in serving in a Christian university environment to apply for the
position of chair of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences
at the associate or full professor level. This tenure-track full-time
faculty position is a 9-month appointment. 

The departmental teaching philosophy is rooted in liberal arts. The chair
will maintain a research program, collaborate with other science faculty at
Samford, stimulate undergraduate research, assist with faculty and 
curriculum development, recruit prospective students and represent the
biology faculty to the administration. 

The department chair will be responsible for teaching two courses each
academic semester, which may include general biology or preprofessional
classes for nonmajors or students in the College of Health Sciences.

Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D. degree in a biological science and
have an established history of excellence in research, teaching and
leadership. They also will have attained the rank of full professor or held
the rank of associate professor (or the international equivalent) for at
least three years at an accredited institution of higher education. 
Candidates must have a demonstrated history of effective collaborative and
collegial leadership with evidence of judicious use of fiscal and spatial re
sources, and of active scholarship that integrates a wide range of modern 
biology and incorporates students (particularly students from groups
underrepresented in science) into research activities, presentations and
publications. Candidates must have experience teaching undergraduate-
level biology courses in an undergraduate-focused environment, and
demonstrate successful application of principles of engaged and innovative
teaching. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.  A
supplemental stipend will be provided for duties performed during the first
summer session each year.

Birmingham is located in a region with rich biodiversity and an active
medical and environmental community. The Department of Biological and
Environmental Science has 12 full-time and six part-time faculty members and 
approximately 100 undergraduate students. The department also houses a non-
thesis master’s program in environmental management. The department actively
supports and develops undergraduate researchers, having secured 
a National Science Foundation REU grant in 2013 (renewed in 2017) and SSTEM
grant in 2015.

Review of applications will begin March 1, 2017, and will continue until the
position is filled. Please submit an application letter, curriculum vitae,
names and addresses of three references, description of leadership 
experience, description of research interests and activities, and a
philosophy of teaching in a Christian university, specifically supported by
two course syllabi from within the last three semesters. The teaching
philosophy must also include a discussion of how the candidate has
contributed to Christian mission in her or his career to this point 
and how the candidate hopes to contribute to the Christian mission of
Samford as expressed in the university mission, vision and values statement.
