[Message forwarded by Dr. David Rostal]
Dear colleagues, The International Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Mini-symposium, will be held as part of the International Sea Turtle Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada, 15-20 April 2017 (http://internationalseaturtlesociety.org/). This Mini-Symposium is scheduled as a full-day meeting on April 16th, 2017. It is designed to provide biologists with basic information on working with tortoises and freshwater turtles versus sea turtles. Many sea turtle biologist work in areas where tortoises and other unique freshwater turtles also exist. Some aspects of sea turtle biology are applicable to non-marine turtles but tortoises and freshwater turtles provide their own distinct set of challenges. These challenges as well as research findings will be discussed in detail by different researchers from around the globe. Basic biology, physiology, genetics, incubation and TSD, and health of tortoises and freshwater turtles will be discussed. Research techniques and questions will also be discussed. The goal of this mini-symposium / workshop is to bring together tortoise and freshwater turtle researchers with sea turtle researchers to share commonalities as well as differences in working with tortoises / freshwater turtles versus sea turtles. Talks will be 30-40 minutes plus 5 to 10 minutes for questions. As an overall goal, we want to provide an opportunity for sea turtle biologist from other areas to learn more about other species in the neighboring habitats to their nesting beaches. Tortoise and freshwater turtle researchers and veterinarians such as Dr. David Rostal who has studied sea turtle, tortoise and freshwater turtle reproduction for the past 30+ years, Dr. Kristina Drake who has been working on desert tortoise ecology for 16 years, Dr. Terry Norton known for his expertise on chelonian medicine, Dr. Justine Congdon whose long term research studies at the E.S George are well known, Dr. Sean Doody who has extensive background in freshwater turtle nesting ecology, Bill Boarman whose background in conservation and anti-predator techniques is extensive, Peter Hudson who is international known for his studies on epidemiology studies in vertebarates, Brian Henen whose studies on tortoise physiology and conservation are internationally known and Hal Avery who has experience with desert tortoise and freshwater turtle conservation are scheduled to speak.
