Postdoctoral and Masters Degree Opportunities A postdoctoral position is available at Murray State University's Hancock Biological Station on Kentucky Lake near Murray, Kentucky. This person will participate in research that focuses on the use of real-time and near real-time aquatic sensors to visualize and predict indicators of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) blooms in streams, rivers, and reservoirs. The project builds on past and present research using long-term and real-time data sets to understand limnological patterns, particularly productivity and community structure. The participant will gain firsthand experience using sensors and data streams to model limnological phenomena. The participant will assist in maintaining, calibrating, and carrying out QA/QC procedures on remote aquatic sensors and data streams.
The postdoctoral position is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation, and the participant will be part of a collaborative effort among Murray State University, the University of Kentucky, and Marshall University. Applicants must have a background in aquatic ecology. Experience with Julia, R, Python, and/or C++ is highly desired as well as experience with data visualization tools. The appointment is for two years. The participant will receive a $47,500 stipend that includes fringe benefits. Support will be available to present research results at scientific conferences. The position will remain open until filled. A Masters Degree position is available through the same grant. Thesis areas might include, but are not limited to, ecology and toxicity of bluegreen algae or correlations of long-term and real-time nutrient data patterns. A course work background in ecology is required, aquatic ecology preferred. The position includes tuition, a stipend, and potential housing at the Biological Station.
