Hiring Organization:
BLM/USU National Aquatic Monitoring Center (NAMC) is a partnership between 
the Bureau of Land Management and Utah State University 
(www.usu.edu/buglab). NAMC assists the BLM and other agencies in 
developing and implementing ecological assessments of streams and rivers. 
As a part of this partnership NAMC operates an aquatic macroinvertebrate 
lab, which annually processes 2000 samples. As such, NAMC houses one the 
largest databases of macroinvertebrate data in the country. Additionally, 
NAMC handles a large amount of chemical, physical and biological data from 
BLM ecological assessments. Both the macroinvertebrate and the ecological 
assessment data have geospatial components. 

Responsibilities:
This position would assist with the development, use and maintenance of 
SQL and geodatabases to store and apply this data to inform public land 
management decisions. Additional duties would include building and running 
of python or R scripts to compute geospatial statistics, as well as to QC, 
edit, and manipulate data. 

Required qualifications
• BS or MS in one of the following fields: Ecology, GIS, Computer Science, 
or Databases.
• Relational databases experience (3-5 years).
• Experience working with large datasets; data storage and manipulation 
(3-5 years).
• Experience coding in at least one of the three following languages: R, 
python, or SQL (3-5 years).
• Ability to create and maintain geodatabases.
• ArcGIS experience (3-5 years).
• Excellent organizational and file management skills.
• Experience communicating technical tools to end users and creating 
detailed documentation of these tools.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work 
independently.

Preferred qualifications
• MS in one of the fields listed above.
• Background working with ecological data, especially aquatic data.
• Three to five years of coding in all three of the following languages: 
R, python, and SQL (particularly, ability to create transactional 
commands).
