Please share widely with any colleagues who might be interested. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Assistant Professor of Chemistry Statement of Job: The University of Maine at Fort Kent, a liberal arts college with an enrollment of just over 1000 students has the distinction of being the Northern-most college campus in Maine. The greater Fort Kent area serves as the gateway to the North Maine Woods, the largest undeveloped area in the eastern United States. Fort Kent is a picturesque small town and a hub of Franco-American culture on the Canadian border. The region offers outdoor recreation opportunities ranging from hiking and paddling to hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. The town hosts annual outdoor-themed events including the Can-Am 250 sled dog race, a qualifier for the famed Iditarod, and the more regionally known International Muskie Fishing Derby. Numerous national and international cross country skiing and biathlon events have been hosted by the town, including two biathlon world cups. A family friendly, alpine ski center is within walking distance of campus. The Fort Kent Outdoor Center, a world renowned Nordic skiing and biathlon center offers skiing, snowshoeing, walking and mountain biking trails within a five minute drive of campus. The region boosts numerous pristine lakes and rivers for fishing and paddling including the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the St John River. Public schools and the Northern Maine Medical Center are also conveniently close to campus. The University of Maine at Fort Kent is currently looking for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Chemistry. The successful candidate will be a broadly trained chemist who demonstrates willingness and ability to teach lectures and laboratories in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, and Soil Science. The ability to teach Introductory Physics is desirable. Other courses may be taught based upon applicant’s interest and expertise. This position supports Biology, Environmental Studies, and Nursing programs, and also serves the General Education Program. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. The candidate will participate in field-based activities that are part of a natural resource- focused curriculum and that may involve travel. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, teaching 12 credit hours per semester, advising undergraduates, supervising capstone projects, mentoring undergraduate research, participating in curriculum development, and engaging in university service activities. Work schedule will be variable based upon teaching schedule. Work beyond regular hours (which may include nights and weekends) will be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position. The employee will establish regular office hours on campus. Qualifications: The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D in an appropriate discipline of Chemistry by August 2017. The candidate will preferably have experience teaching undergraduates, as well as a research program with the potential to involve undergraduates. Experience in distance learning technologies is desirable. Additional Info: The starting salary for the Assistant Professor of Chemistry is $48,384 plus a 10% employer contribution to the University of Maine System (UMS) retirement program.
