We are seeking a Research Associate with strong interests in ecosystem science 
and plant physiology to join the lab of Professors Andrew Richardson and Mariah 
Carbone on the Flagstaff campus of Northern Arizona University. Research in the 
lab is focused on ecosystem carbon cycling in the context of global change. 
Current research projects emphasize carbon allocation in plants, using 
observational and experimental approaches, including isotopes and trace gas 
fluxes. The Research Associate will be responsible for coordinating lab 
activities, including participating in field sampling, conducting wet-lab 
analysis of plant and soil samples, and supervising undergraduate technicians.

Example of duties and responsibilities:
• Coordinates field work and sample analysis
• Conducts field sampling
• Prepares and processes plant samples for chemical analysis (e.g. 
nonstructural carbohydrates, pigment extraction, etc.)
• Prepares samples for isotopic (13C, 14C) analysis (vacuum line, 
graphitization)
• Develops and tests protocols
• Orders supplies and tracks expenses
• Maintains instruments and equipment for field and lab
• Maintains lab standards, calibrates instruments
• Coordinates lab safety training and compliance
• Manages and organizes data sets
• Manages and supervises undergraduate technicians
• Trains graduate students in laboratory technique
• Assists with instrument-based measurements and maintenance in the field (data 
loggers, met stations, eddy covariance flux systems, soil CO2 flux, etc.)
• Assists with the design, set-up, and maintenance of field experiments
• Contributes to the analysis and interpretation of data, and to writing 
manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Contributes to the preparation of research proposals
• Facilitates lab events (weekly lab meetings, project meetings and workshops, 
retreats, etc.)
• Manages lab travel logistics and planning


Minimum qualifications:
• Master of Science degree in Ecology, Plant physiology, Biogeochemistry, Soil 
science, Analytical chemistry, Earth system science, or a related STEM field
• At least 3 years relevant professional (post M.S. or post-doctoral) research 
experience

Preferred qualifications:
• PhD in Ecology, Plant physiology, Biogeochemistry, Soil science, Analytical 
chemistry, Earth system science, or a STEM related field
• Graduate-level training in analytical chemistry
• Graduate-level training in the use of isotopes as tracers for biological 
processes
• Training in ecology and plant physiology
• Training in statistics at the graduate level
• Experience conducting ecological field work in remote locations.
