We seek a full-time lab manager/technician to join a dynamic team focused on water quality research. The successful candidate will be involved in coordinating and leading activities in the Laboratory for Environmental Analyses (LEA) in the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment at Illinois State University. LEA analyzes water and soil samples for a range of projects, many of which are associated with assessing how changes in agricultural management practices can improve surface water quality. Primary instrumentation includes a Lachat Flow Injection Analysis and a Dionex ion chromatograph. LEA analyses over 5,000 samples each year for internal and external clients, provides research laboratory experiences for 5 – 10 students each semester, and interfaces with field research teams. The ideal candidate will be passionate about science, organized, an effective communicator, and team-oriented. This is a 12-month non-tenure-track Academic Professional position with benefits. Major duties and responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily and short-term management and operations of LEA. Primary responsibilities will be nutrient analyses on a Lachat FIA, using EPA approved methods and QA/QC. Other duties include equipment troubleshooting and maintenance, purchasing and inventory, as well as reporting and data management. The position also involves scheduling, training, and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students working in LEA. Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, chemistry, geology, biology or related field, depending upon experience and skills. Laboratory experience. Attention to detail, good leadership and communication skills, and an ability to work independently. Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree in relevant field. Experience with water nutrient analyses using Flow Injection Analyses and ion chromatography, QA/QC methods, management of large databases, and leadership and team management skills. R programming skills would contribute to aspects of the research program. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
